Katie and Anthony were married at Sidling House, a historic property set in the stunning township of Wandiligong, an old Gold Mining town just out of Bright in North-East Victoria. A big congratulations to Katie & Anthony, it was an absolute pleasure to capture and be part of their day. Thank you to Katie & Anthony for sharing the story of their day.
Anthony and I had arrived back from living in London, engaged! Our families and friends were thrilled and at first the idea of a wedding was very daunting, especially when being the centre of attention is both of our least favourite thing!
We had discussed what was important about have a wedding as opposed to going to a registry office and for us it was being around our friends and family, dancing, eating and enjoying a few ‘bevs’ together. We knew we did not want too much fuss and I did not even plan to wear a white dress but we decided that what we cared about was quality time with the people we cared about the most.
Even on a budget, we wanted to make sure we chose well and not blow our budget on the rabbit hole of weddings. Our focus was to keep it simple, beautiful and thoughtful.
The wedding planning had begun, but where should we have this wedding?
Our beautiful friends had recently moved to Wandiligong in Victoria and have been doing up the gorgeous Sidling House and running it as an Airbnb. While spending NYE at their place we decided it would be the perfect place for a relaxed wedding, filled with love and fun. The location and scenery were to us the main attraction and we wanted that highlighted.
When speaking to Jason he listened to what we wanted and worked around our ‘less traditional’ approach such as not having an official bridal party and seeing each other before the wedding and he was a 100% supportive and on board.
My mum, sister and wonderful friend Ailsa had such a great time getting ready, thanks to Amber from Nomad Hair along with Daisy, a local Bright make-up artist! Amber’s music selections and positive energy bounced off everyone and we all looked a million dollars after Amber and Daisy had finished with us!
While I was off frolicking, Anthony and our incredible wedding crew of friends helped set up our wedding garden party. We could not have had our lovely wedding without our friends’ dressing tables at the pub and running around town getting ice and making fresh dips for a cheeseboard spread. It was a real team effort and I know Anthony felt the love as people came and went with jobs completed and ready for the party.
A HUGE thank you needs to be given to Donny and Kerryn Paolone at Sidling House for their countless weeks of gardening, grass growing and simply being there every step of the way. We truly could not have done it without them. It may have been their third wedding at Sidling House but it felt so special and the garden was filled with blooming flowers, bright colours and wafting views of Wandi valley. Just stunning!
Then it came time to walk down the aisle- but everyone was early! Our original plan was to enter through the cottage and mingle with everyone before walking down to the bottom garden. However when we realised that was too tricky and Jason who was as cool as a cucumber brainstormed an alternative entrance which was super beautiful. As we walked down together, just Anthony and I, towards the bottom garden all we could hear was the songs of currawongs and our excited friends and families starting to notice us arrive. The valley was alight with pouring sunshine and everything danced with the glow of a bright blue sky and a warm spring sun. When I finally looked up, I was breath taken by the most amazing arbor I had ever seen.
My amazingly talented friend and florist Sara Tajima (‘little wing’) blew us all away with her incredible flowers. I had given her creative control and feel so special by her gift of her time, effort and love that went into her flower creations. I laugh now thinking about Sara’s mantra of ‘holding back and have restraint’ towards the arbor display as we foraged for foliage for the table decorations and for the arbor at the Sidling house property in the days beforehand, I kept saying ‘go nuts, whatever you do will be awesome’. I actually had no idea how incredible the arbor was until I was walking down the aisle and now just thinking about it brings joy. Therefore, I concluded that ‘little wing’ has soared!
We had the coolest celebrant Lynette Bannister who went above and beyond with our requests and even tried sourcing an Auslan interpreter when our efforts fell short. Her calm presence was welcomed and her openness to our less formal affair and then her flexibility when our plans changed on the day where much appreciated.
After the ceremony we had drinks and nibbles in Sidling House top garden before wandering down the dirt track (or if you could hitch a ride) to the Wandi Pub for dinner, a couple of good belly laugh speeches and finally and most importantly the dancing. We were super happy with the band – Black Tie Party – for playing all the tunes everyone enjoys and they were very easy to work with.
The Wandi Pub looked amazing at night with hundreds of fairy lights and a little sparkle of magic that the wedding crew and staff from the pub added to made it look beautiful. We loved that the pub sourced local wines and had a good selection of beers on tap. Discussions quickly turned to the pubs most amazing food! I think all guests left talking about the food and it was defiantly a highlight. We asked for cocktail style where if you wanted to sit down and enjoy you could. Stella and Heath definitely met that brief, oh and did we mention how yummy it all was?!
We had a different Heath from the Bright ice creamery deliver freshly made ice cream, which I think went down a treat after all that dancing and boozing! Tim and Paddy from the Wandi Pub were easy to work and we cannot speak more highly of the pub as a wedding venue and look forward to many more visits!
Anthony and I had a wonderful day and it truly was so much fun. It has been so much fun looking over Jason’s photos and selecting some gems so we can remember the day forever. Jason is such a lovely person and his help along the way was pivotal in the success of the day. We highly recommended working with Jason, not just for his photography but for the amazing man he is!
